Highlights

Prolong your "other-worldly" visit by staying overnight in one of the gorgeously restored traditional houses, and/or having a coffee or meal in one of the cafes or restaurants.

Find out why Kinmen has Western-style buildings, and about typical food and clothes from back in the day in the two museums (Jinshui Elementary School; Overseas Chinese Culture Museum)

Forget about the modern world in Shuitou by wandering amongst Kinmen's widest variety of traditional architecture.

Introduction

👉Brand new online 3D Map Experience the different Shuitou settlement
Shuitou settlement 3D Map

Also called Jinshui, Shuitou is located to the southwest of Jincheng Township. It is a settlement inhabited by people with different surnames; Huang is the most common surname. Since it was close to Shuitou Pier, it served as a transportation hub between Kinmen and Xiamen in the early days. Shuitou
Shuitou used to be a wealthy settlement. It has kept the most Fujian-style and western-style buildings and the most exquisite ones. Deyue Tower, Jinshui Elementary School, and Overseas Chinese Culture Exhibition Hall are all unique attractions in Kinmen.
Shuitou
There is a proverb in Kinmen: “Though as rich as Shuitou, and yet without a house like those in Shuitou.” It means that you can be as wealthy as people in Shuitou, but still, it is not easy to have a beautiful house like those in Shuitou village. This represents the praises that locals heap on the Shuitou settlement. In the past, the villagers in Shuitou were mostly merchant seamen, apart from making a living by farming and fishing. Thus, there are both traditional Fujian-style buildings and exotic western-style buildings that were influenced by foreign cultures in the settlement. Traditional Fujian-style buildings are as follows: Huang’s Ancestral Hall, the eighteen roof ridges, etc. After the mid-Qing dynasty, a great number of overseas Chinese wired money back to fund the establishment of the delicate western-style buildings, such as Jinshui School and Deyue Tower. Shutou is like a place to display historic buildings, and also a large traditional settlement that is the most well-preserved in Kinmen.

Normal - Not much to expect.

We travelled so far, to view historical houses. The only memories were that this house has an external stove, builds like a tomb, a fire place. The letter boxes coloured & build with the words written in mandarin "KinMen". Some bomb shelters could still be standing next to these houses (where the residents hides in these during air raids -in war time). Our group even visited schools & vacated Peranakan houses (now taken over & refurbished by the Taiwanese government). Anyway, there are two KinMen, a Big & Small KinMen (the smaller being an island), so it depends on which you are visiting.

    18 traditional architectural Wang houses

    4 2018-09

A successful businessman returned Kinmen to build a village of 18 houses including a school and family temple. The architecture is well kept but too many businesses residing there to ruin the integrity of these unique historic houses.

    Old Architecture on Kinmen

    4 2018-10

There are several places on Kinmen where old architecture has been preserved. Where it has been preserved/restored it is beautiful and educational. Kinmen people are very friendly.

    Nice small village

It’s impressive how there are so many Fujinaese style houses still intact all over Kinmen. Shuitou Village near the Ferry Terminal of the same name is one of the villages with a small concentration of Fujianese style houses. Deyou Tower is the recognizable structure seen in many Kinmen postcards.

    Nice village to visit

    4 2018-03

If you visit Kinmen Island, that is probably one of the nicest places to visit. Just take the bus from Jincheng, and then walk around the village and have a look at the old houses, the former school and Deyue tower. Nothing overly exciting, but really pleasant for an hour or two.
