Highlights

The broadcasting station here, like Beishan on another part of the island, sent messages across the water encouraging soldiers in Mainland China to surrender.

Mashan was the outpost of utmost strategic importance, where naval operations in the Strait were closely monitored.

This is the closest point to Mainland China on the main island of Kinmen.

Introduction

Highlights
-This is the closest point to Mainland China on the main island of Kinmen.
-Mashan was the outpost of utmost strategic importance, where naval operations in the Strait were closely monitored.
-The broadcasting station here, like Beishan on another part of the island, sent messages across the water encouraging soldiers in Mainland China to surrender.

Mashan is only 2,100 meters away from Xiamen's Jiaoyu Islet. At low tide, the distance narrows down to 1,800 meters.
Mashan Observation Station
On a clear day, both the east and west peaks of Hongjian Mt in Fujian Province, China are visible. Once inside the gate of the observation station, you enter a tunnel, and see displays of military facilities.
Mashan Observation Station
Mashan Broadcasting Station
The speakers were loud enough to reach Mainland China, and the locals called this spot "the shouting station". The propaganda included sweet ballads sung by Teresa Deng, who was an equally popular singer on both sides of the Strait. Now, you can occasionally hear pop music and Taiwanese songs coming gently out of the speakers.

Can skip if you've visited other military sights

Mashan Observation Point can probably be skipped if you visited a few military sights in Kinmen. Like most observation points, it has a small tunnel system and a lookout facing towards mainland China.

Not the best tunnels we visited on Kinmen

    3 2018-05

These tunnels were very narrow and didn't really take you anywhere special. Also crowded, so you had to go in one direction or you ran into people and had to turn around. The only redeeming feature is that when you get to the end, you are very close to mainland China, which is only about 10 km across the water. So you can look across and see it (air quality and weather permitting).

Walking through the tunnels, you couldn't help but feel the tension that soldiers on patrol here must have felt during the times of crisis with the mainland. Be sure to go to the fortified observation bunker to watch maritime traffic sail by.

Mainland China as it once was

For a long time, this was as close as you were likely to get to Red China. Througth powerful binoculars, you could see people goingf about their daily business on the other side of the Taiwan Strait, only a kilometer or two away. I got a kick from seeing this sight, even though I've been to mainland China ten or more times. Powerful speakers also boadcast inducements for PLA (People's Liberation Army) solderis to go over to the Taiwan forces who occcupied Kinmen.

    Interesting Place.

MaShan is at the closest point to mainland China. Through the large –sized binoculars, we can see the scenes across the sea if weather permit. It used to have powerful loud speakers for propaganda purpose. It would broadcast, “Mainlanders are (under) Deep Water and (facing) Hot Fire” or “Three Principles of People unify China”. Nevertheless, no more.
